In collaboration with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the environmentally friendly Biomethanization Facility covers a gross area of 25,000 sqm, with a total built area of 10,000 sqm, in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul. Operating under the motto of zero waste, it repurposes food waste collected from cafeterias, workplaces, and hotels to create clean energy.
Through the preprocessing of organic waste and its storage in digestion tanks, the facility efficiently converts produced biogas into electrical energy, generating 1.4 MW per hour, which is ample power for approximately 5,000 households. The organization layout of necessary volumes for these consecutive processes to take place is arranged according to the systematic flow. The facility includes Biofilters, Sanitation Tanks, a Hydrolysis Tank, Rebutter Tanks, Gas Balloon and a Burning Chimney. To ensure consistency and ideal conditions for subsequent phases, the Main Building is dedicated to the initial processing of collected organic waste upon arrival, where tasks such as dumping, crushing, and elimination are efficiently managed. Additionally, the building provides essential office spaces, including meeting rooms and system control rooms, where professionals oversee and regulate the processes with precision. The biogas produced is stored in the Gas Balloon is transformed into energy and heat with the help of the cogeneration system. Clean energy produced is then supplied to the national grid through high voltage transformers.
Through meticulous planning and innovative design, the architectural endeavor not only addresses pressing waste management concerns but also champions sustainability, paving the way for a greener, more resource-efficient future. Notably, the environmentally friendly facility achieves an annual reduction of 81,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing 40,000 vehicles from traffic. In addition to that, the high organic value compost produced as a byproduct finds beneficial use in the parks and gardens of Istanbul. The facility is enclosed by a green area of 10,000 sqm, respecting the surrounding forest.
