The 429 Strand building was originally designed by architect Charles Holden in 1908 as the headquarters for the British Medical Association. Its façade featured a series of sculptures by Jacob Epstein, representing the development of science and the Ages of Man—his first major commission in London, which sparked controversy and ultimately led to the defacement of the sculptures.
Located at the corner of Agar Street and the Strand, a major street in the City of Westminster, Central London, the building now rises five stories with a slate-clad mansard roof in a neo-Mannerist style. The façade of the steel frame structure showcases grey Cornish granite on the lower floors and Portland stone on the upper two. Initially, the ground floor housed lettable shops before the building was converted into an embassy.
By preserving the historical façade of the building, we propose renovating the interior of the existing Embassy of Zimbabwe in London. Our design for Zimbabwe House integrates consulate and hotel functions, ensuring seamless circulation for both private and public access with added volumes. The interior showcases cultural elements through tapestries and decorative artwork, while the clean lines and natural materials foster a refreshing atmosphere for work and leisure.
Featuring softer tones drawn from a color palette inspired by the national flag of Zimbabwe, the design is beautifully complemented by natural materials such as wood and stone, enhancing the overall aesthetic. Tall windows and skylights maximize natural light, while an open-plan layout with partial dividers fosters a buoyant atmosphere. In respecting the existing façade, we added a terrace level atop the roof, where hotel guests can relax by the pool and enjoy partial views of Waterloo Bridge and the city skyline.
